We have a visitor in 2M this month! His name is Karl, the Kindness Elf. He wrote us this letter:
Dear Class, Hi! My name is Karl and I am a Kindness Elf. I am going to be visiting your classroom for the next few weeks. I like to help people spread kindness, especially during the holiday season! Do you think that you could help me spread kindness around Roosevelt school? Each day I will have a new message with a different way to spread kindness at school and even sometimes at home! If you have an idea for a way to spread kindness you can write it in a note during recess or after school and then give it to your teacher. I can’t wait to see all the kind things you do for each other and others in your lives. Remember to always be kind, not just when I’m around =)!! Kindly, Karl, The Kindness Elf After reading Turkey in Trouble by Wendi Silvano, the students worked hard to create a disguise for their turkey so it wouldn't be eaten just look Tom Turkey did in the story. Students had to get creative and plan a way that would surely disguise their turkey and keep it from becoming Thanksgiving dinner! At home, students worked with their families to design their disguise. Wow, were they good! Then at school, students had to write a persuasive writing piece to go along with their turkey. We really tricked our readers by being so convincing with reasons to support our argument! Check out our turkeys below.
Today we had a really fun and exciting assembly brought to us by our PTO. The presenter showed us his robot and all the cool things he could do! The whole 2nd grade got to go to all the different stations to see how things work. We got to see real 3D printer in action, used a bike to power a light, built an arch and much more! The PTO moms helped us at most of the stations. A big Thank you to our PTO!
We have been reading The Candy Corn Contest by Patricia Rielly Giff in class. The students are really enjoying the storyline and the characters. We are paying close attention to the characters, setting and plot in the story. For the month of November, we are going to have a Candy Corn Contest in our class. Students will earn guesses by being "caught with good behavior". This means that good behavior will earn students many guesses. Good luck guessing!! This week we worked with Mr. Corcoran in the Discovery Lab explore Glurch. Is it a solid or a liquid? We experimented in different ways and decided as a class that it was a solid. But you can't hold it without it falling apart! What do you think?
We have been working on our retellings for fictional stories. Students have learned multiple ways to retell as story like the 5-finger retell, Somebody Wanted But Then Finally and sequencing events. Here are some examples of the Retelling Comic books that the students created.
In class we read a book called Fireboat: The heroic adventures of the John J. Harvey. To learn more about the John J. Harvey Fireboat that helped out on 9/11 go to http://www.fireboat.org/ Some other links about 9/11 Survivor Tree a great short poem read by Whoppi Goldberg telling the story of a tree buried during the attacks of 9/11 that survived and kept on growing. September Roses- A true story about two sisters who did a good deed with something that was so special to them in the days following September 11th. |
